Rhode Island College, or RIC, for short, is a coeducational, state-supported comprehensive college, located in Providence, which is Rhode Island's state capital and largest city, housing within its limits nearly 172 000 people, at the time of the 2009 census.
RIC was established in 1854, being founded by the Rhode Island General Assembly, and first started as the Rhode Island State Normal School.
It presently offers its students `more than 90 undergraduate and 30 graduate academic programs including a wide range of programs in management, education, nursing, and social work, as well as in the performing and fine arts`, through 5 schools, which are: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, School of Social Work, School of Management, and School of Nursing.
RIC's athletic teams are known as the Anchormen and they compete in NCAA Division III, in various winter, spring and fall, men's and women's sports.
Among RIC's noteworthy graduates, there are also: Robert Gonzalvez - the first Hispanic judge in the history of Rhode Island, Viola Davis - Tony Award winning and Academy Award nominated actress, and Ron McLarty - noted television actor and novelist.
